Rocket From The Crypt

$1.98

Punk rock is a dead music in the sense that it’s something that happened, you know punk rock was about that late seventies explosion of music and yet it was basically just rock ‘n roll but maybe a little bit more rebellious, a little bit more direct. It didn’t have the symbolism, people just came out and said what they wanted and there was no rules just different people doing whatever they wanted. That freedom of expression that came with punk rock and that's gone you know, and for people to say like punk rock music it’s just kind of like well punk rock music now is like bands on MTV, on the radio, they’re using those songs to sell tampons and Budweiser, how can that be punk? It’s not up to me to say this is the dictionary definition of what it is. But I do know it’s not about a drum beat, and it’s not about a hairstyle, and it’s a lot more than that, and so when I see it become something like a mockery it pisses me off and maybe makes me want to play music that sounds a little bit more pissed off -- Speedo

Lucy's Fur Coat

We were a bar band. We were trying to say: 'Sweat, rock 'n' roll, have some drinks, shake your ass' That's all we ever wanted to say. I think we play with more sweat and energy and altruism maybe than some other bands. We're all pleasantly surprised that people want to come and desire to be a part of it. – Charlie Ware….

Creedle

$1.98

It's impossible to write a bio on Creedle. As Most Wanted felons, they won't reveal a damn thing about themselves. It has been rumored that they are associated with infamous mass murderers. After only brief encounters with Creedle through chinese screens and smoke machines, set up in downtown warehouses, it seems likely. For the purpose of the new 7", they've used the aliases Dede, Didi (pronounced DieDie), Bobo, and Titi -- From “it’s not cool to like green day anymore”....

Deadbolt

We’re just a strange rock and roll band. If I had to break it down, I’d say it’s about 13% rockabilly, 51% surf, 8% punk rock, 7% true crime novels, 16% B-movies, 3% Black and Decker, and 2% inside jokes that some certain people seem to get. The pioneering rockabilly guys in the 50s were making this weird, dangerous, out of their mind, rock and roll. That’s where the "billy" part comes in. I guess we’re just kinda carrying the tiki torch into modern times. We’re not interested in rehashing or trying to get the authentic sound of Peggy Sue meeting the guy in Dad’s Oldsmobile at the local malt shop. It’s more like real life tales … and real life is creepy and weird. Just open a newspaper. Voodoobilly is the seedy underbelly, the dark side. It’s the stuff that gets swept under the rug. It’s the steamer trunk in the basement you have to pry open.

The Dragons

$0.99

Me and Kenny were sitting there one late night and he commented, 'How come we're not on the radio? How come we never made it big?' And I said, 'Look at all the people we list as influences. None of the people we say we like are pop sensations on the radio. I mean, Johnny Thunders never made it. The New York Dolls weren't on the radio; most of them ended up dead, heartbroken and broke. And that's what we love: you know, the tragedy and the moments of euphoria in between, the moments we have on stage every now and then. You can't listen to any of our music and think, 'Well, they tried to write a top ten hit.' It's just been what we feel and what we believe. If it happens, then great, but it's not something we chased....

Drive Like Jehu

$0.99

Drive Like Jehu was just white boys jacking off. When you're younger, bands that you see affect you. I'm still affected deeply by music that I like, and I get inspiration from bands I see playing all the time. But there's something about that time when you were younger and you were equating the quality of something by how difficult it is to play. Drive Like Jehu's songs took forever to write and it wasn't always fun. It was fun to play them once we had them written and recorded, but writing them was like pulling your hair out....

Fishwife

Although Fishwife had its roots in '80s hardcore, the schizoid post-hardcore zaniness that the group unleashed on its audience no doubt had any straight-edge kid running for the nearest exit. Lead singer Ryan Foxe's insane stage antics included, among others, things like getting naked, a dildo ventriloquist act, leaping from a six-foot-high Marshall stack and landing on a cup of the favorite Mexican rice drink Horchata, as well as handing out peanut butter and jelly sandwich's at a local San Diego club that got them banned from playing the joint forever -- Rick Kutner, All Music Guide....

Tanner

….After a few months, the remaining Fishwife members regrouped, rethought, and reformed... as Tanner. "No big deal" says Gar. "The natural process was to continue on," he explains. "We already had a chemistry together, and we all kind of knew what we were into. It was pretty easy to start writing. It was gonna be different, and everyone was inspired to get going.” Tanner taunts you with hooks, but then bulldozes you with power. --Mark Woodlief, 1995

“All the good stuff is at thrift stores," says O. "I've been buying all this great vinyl since I was a kid, like Esquivel. Check out the rerelease of "Esquivel's Space Age Bachelor Pad Music," same album title as Stereolab. That's funny. Stereolab probably like Esquivel so maybe they took it from him." From the looks of Fluf's liner notes, to ask "why do you hate digital?" seems logical. But O. just wants to stick up for the music fan. "I'm not anti-digital, I'm anti having no choice between records and CDs…."

Buddy Blue

The first couple Street Scenes were amazing, and I have great memories of them. This was before it became a zoo and before it became this entity which shamelessly panders to the worst musical taste in young American consumer culture. Back then, you had the Blasters, Los Lobos, X, Robert Cray, the Neville Brothers [and] the Beat Farmers all on two stages-when one band quit playing, the next started their set immediately on the other stage. You could take a whizz without waiting in line for a half-hour, there weren't any teenagers projectile-vomiting among the assemblage, just a good-sized crowd of hardcore music fans enjoying a lineup of some of America's best bands of the time. It was perfect.

Mojo Nixon

$1.98

I’m selling two things when I’m performing—fuck you, and I don’t give a fuck. I’m all about the moment. So gettin’ in shape and all that, naw, that ain’t gonna happen. I like the illusion. I don’t wanna know your real name and your feelings! Just gimme the shtick! I don't know. I don't care. Lots of people like it on a frat boy, fuck buddy, poop joke level, lots of people like it on a Libertarian Communist level, people like it as a desperate attempt to save the soul of rock n roll -- if you don't like it, that's fine. I'm a good bullshitter -- I'm not gonna pretend to be a brilliant singer/songwriter, I'm just a good bullshitter and I like to hear [makes backbeat rhythm sounds] behind me when I bullshit. I could have 3 monkeys and a Casio behind me -- people come to hear Mojo bullshit....

The Rugburns

Steve and I are two very different people, which is maybe why we worked so well together. We always said we had a symbiotic relationship, like sharks and Remoras, Yin and Yang. Black and white. Reagan and jellybeans. If he could, he'd be out on the road 365 days a year...Remind me to tell you someday how much I hate radio. It's all a big sham, fooling people into thinking they're listening to stuff they like when actually their taste is manipulated by corporations that do market research, as though music were a commodity like toilet paper -- Dr. Robert....

Drip Tank

1. Who needs a midlife crisis when you’ve had as much fun as we all had? I wasn’t actually in Drip Tank for the 7-11 tour (that was my introduction to them, and I knew right away that I wanted to be in that band). I was, however, around for the Drip Tank Drum Corps (6 drummers at once), the time we played an overture of our set list to start off a show, the time Joel wrapped his head in duct tape while playing, the Christmas in July show (complete with Santa and Xmas/Hanukkah songs), the recording session of tv theme songs (I wonder where that tape is?), sneaking into CMJ under another band’s name, and endless impromptu cover songs. – Julie D

Boilermaker

In the early 1990s, San Diego was a capital helping rewrite the rules of underground music. As a band, we were on the fringe of an incredible breakthrough...Something very unexpected, never fitting into any local niche. We experimented with our own sounds, exploring without intent and without scene approval. We borrowed from a sea of influence, both musically and culturally....

rust

Whenever there was a deep conversation, I wasn't solicited to participate, but on the other hand, there are a lot of musicians who take themselves superseriously and try to get these deep thoughts out and express them through their music. And I thought, 'It's true, you're only in rock 'n' roll.' It's not that great of an art form. Get over yourselves….

The Unband

I considered asking a total stranger to summarize the fall of The Unband, provided he had never heard of it. Exhaustion, conspiracy, tornado, booze, lists, women, money, shake-ups at mega-corp, artistic differences, druggings, the giant inflatable Hand of Fate. It’s the same story, even when the most important part is that it isn’t. Anyone could tell it cold. That’s the whole joke right there: Guy walks into a bar…. –- Mike Ruffino ....*though they are from Massachusetts and were only in San Diego for about a half a week, the Unband get honorable mention for doing it right. Onstage drinking, vomiting, nudity, fireworks. Occasionally, they lit stages on fire. That and the Lemmy Kilmister seal of approval will get you everywhere….
